The Truth About Spray Foam Insulation
There is no denying that spray foam insulation is one of the most effective and economical ways to insulate your home. However, the advertising departments of spray foam manufacturers have worked hard to distract us from the fact that it is a petroleum based toxic chemical concoction that needs to be carefully and properly used and handled by trained professionals.
Is spray foam good for walls?
The ‘A’ side of spray polyurethane formulations commonly contains methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and the ‘B’ side is comprised of polyol resin, catalysts, blowing agent, surfactant and flame retardant. These chemicals react to form a foam that expands up to 30-60 times its liquid volume when sprayed.
ARMOR Insulations, LLC This expansion is what makes spray foam so effective in creating a tight seal that stops air from moving through walls. This is an important characteristic to have in your homes because it helps reduce energy costs and lower utility bills.
The airtight seal also helps with condensation problems that arise from big temperature differences between the outside and inside of your house. When the inside of your walls get cold and the moisture from your body meets the warm air it forms condensation in the wall cavities. This can result in mold, mildew and rot. Spray foam gets in all the little places to help prevent this.
The airtight seal created by spray foam can help with reducing your indoor humidity too. High humidity can cause many issues from dry skin to respiratory problems including allergies and asthma. Spray foam helps to keep your indoor air comfortable and healthy.
